Chapter 17

Sarah had been hoping for some peace, but all she got was an earful from Harvey and Stanley. Both men were trying to outdo the other with stories of how they were experts at fishing and hunting.

When Harvey had told her he’d seen a gorilla one time in the woods when he’d been hunting, Stanley laughed and told him he must have been drinking. And when Stanley said he’d caught an alligator one time when he’d been fishing in the Mississippi River, Harvey called him a liar.

By the time they made it to the pond to fish, Sarah was sick and tired of hearing them both talk.

She walked over to Johnny and knelt down beside him. “Need any help baiting your hook?

“Nah. I got it.” He bit his lip and concentrated on putting the worm on the hook.

“He can’t do it. His dad always put his worm on his hook,” Jake snarled.

Sarah felt the slight burn of anger building inside of her. She glanced over at her brother. His shoulders slumped forward, and he cast his eyes on the ground.

“Jake,” Noah warned.

“He knows how to bait a hook, Jake.” Sarah narrowed her eyes at the boy.

“Yeah? Then why is he sitting over there crying like a baby?” Jake sneered.

Sarah jerked her head in Johnny’s direction. He didn’t bother looking up, but wiped his face with the back of his hand.

She headed over to Johnny and knelt down. “Are you okay?” She kept her voice quiet so the other boys couldn’t hear.

“No.” He looked up at her with large tears in his eyes and held up his hand. “I stuck the hook in my thumb.”

She gasped and grabbed his hand. “Keep still.”

“Look!” Jake pointed at Johnny’s hand. “He’s got a hook stuck in his thumb. He will have to go to the ER to get it cut out.”

“I am?” Johnny looked at Sarah with terror in his eyes.

“Let me see.” Harvey elbowed his way past the boys and bent down. “Dang. That has to hurt. I had a friend who had a hook in his thumb and they had to cut it off.”

“The hook or the thumb?” Stanley asked as he looked over Sarah’s shoulder.

Sarah looked at Harvey and gave him a warning look not to scare her brother.

Harvey scratched his head. “I don’t remember.”

She rolled her eyes.

Noah came over and knelt beside Johnny. “Let me see.” He examined the wound carefully. “There’s good news. You will not go to the ER. We can get it out.”

“But it will hurt.” Johnny shook his head.

“For just a second, but then it will feel much better.” Noah gave him a reassuring smile. He looked up at Stanley. “Hand me some fishing line.”

Stanley set the bag with the fishing supplies on the ground and opened it. He pulled out a spool of fishing line.

Noah took it and pulled out a pocket knife. After unrolling a long piece of line, he cut it.

“What are you going to do with that?” Sarah cocked her head.
