The difficulties of pressing farther north were nevertheless overcome one more time, in a manner that starkly confirmed the daunting price of completing the project. After World War II, the park district negotiated with the Saddle and Cycle Club, the owner of land north of Foster Avenue, where the drive then ended (see figure 6.5). The club had conveyed its riparian rights to the LPC previously (the date being reported variously as 1928 and 1931), in return for a generous boundary agreement giving the club new reclaimed land. In 1938, echoing the complaint filed by the Wall plaintiffs one year earlier, the club filed suit seeking rescission. The action was evidently held in abeyance during the war; after Wall and the war, the park district secured a new settlement. Specifically, in 1947, the parties agreed to relocate the boundary line of the club’s property farther east, giving the club an additional four acres of submerged land. In 1950, the Tribune reported that the Saddle and Cycle Club was selling all of its original land that fronted on Sheridan Road, to the west. The article explained that “[t]he nearly three acres along Sheridan rd. to be sold thus are offset by the more than four acres acquired from the park board.” In other words, in exchange for giving up its objections to the new plan, the club was able to pocket the proceeds from selling prime real estate and still end up with more land than it ever had previously.50
