Chapter 17

“What box?” I asked, trying to keep my voice as steady as I can.

My best friend in the world turned to me and said, “Don’t play stupid with me. I know you have it, and I need it.” Her eyes were gleaming.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.” I wish I had not sent Torin away.

“Come on now. Just give it over and no one will get hurt.” Was she threatening me now?

I stuttered out, “You would hurt me? Over a box? I thought we were friends.”

A frustrated groan escaped from her. “I’m doing this to protect you. Because we are friends. I need that box.”

“I don’t understand.”

“You aren’t the only one with secrets, Lainie,” she snapped at me, then, she took a step back. I could see her mind working, her jaw was clenching and unclenching. Her hands following suit in a rhythm.

“Jeanette, what’s going on?” My voice was soft, trying to be soothing.

“Will you just give me the box?” Her voice quivering. “If I can return it, they won’t know.”

“Return it where?” I took a step towards her, still unsure of what was going on.

She rolled her eyes at me. “Where you took it from. Mr. Stanley’s house.”

“I don’t have it. Torin has it,” I said. She knew way too much for it to all be guesses.

“We have to get it back from him,” she stated. “Text him, now. Tell him to bring it over.”

“Don’t you think I’ve been trying to get it back? He showed it to Kaylan,” I stated.

“They are the protectors, aren’t they?” she asked. I didn’t want to throw them under the bus, so I didn’t answer her question.

I asked her, “How do you know so much?”

She paused, debating on how much to tell me. I could see her body tense. She wanted to tell me. I could tell.

“Listen, Lainie, I love you like a sister. You need to know that first.”

“I know you do. So, tell me. I told you my secrets.”

“I can’t.” Her voice almost was pleading.

“Who are you?” I asked again.

“I’m Jeanette, your friend. And I’m trying to protect you,” she stated, her voice growing louder, more confident.

“Protect me from who?” I asked.

“I can’t say anymore.”

“I think you better, if you value our friendship.”

“All you need to know is that there are dangerous people after you. I need that box back.”

“I know that already. How long have you known?”

A laugh escaped her. “All my life. Kincaid is my uncle.” The words spoken struck fear in my heart.

“You’ve been spying on me.”

Jeanette plopped down to sit on the bed. “It started that way. But I came to like you. Really like you. And your mom, too. I had been told how awful and wicked she was, but she’s not. She’s a really great person.” Her eyes glimmering with unspent tears.

The words she spoke caused my heart to sink. Another lie in my life. My whole life was a lie. Everything. I was so tired of it.

I sat down beside her. I looked straight ahead, not at her, and asked, “You know my father?”

“I do.
