Two hours later, a commotion below awoke Beowyn and sent him peering over the loft's edge.

"Who goes there?" he challenged.

"Wha... Is someone here?" a voice answered. With a lamp struck, the two men stared at each other.

"I am Hampton's Captain of the Guard. What is your business here?"

"Like yours, I suppose," the man answered. "My men and I need shelter from this storm, and this is the nearest we could find."

"There are already nine of us in the loft. Perhaps you'd best move on."

"In this?" The man gestured toward the door and the fierce storm howling outside.

"Suit yourself, then. Sleep with the pigs if you will." Beowyn scowled, then dismissed the matter to return to sleep.

One of the newcomers curled up by the cow. Another sat down and leaned against the post in the center of the hut, in spite of the horses crowding him. The third approached the leader.

"Lord Hampton's men? And we stay here?" he whispered. "Are you mad, Ian?"

"There's naught we can do right now. Get some sleep and we'll away ere they awake." Ian frowned, then searched until he found a corner suitable for rest, though a little nearer to the pigs and their malodorous muck than he liked. Pulling his cloak tightly around him, he leaned his head against the wall and managed to find sleep.
