A MONTH’S WORTH OF VISIONS

Brooks

All cleaned up and ready to surprise the twins, I pass my closer, Miguel, in the hallway. I make to speak to him, but he is a man on a mission. I swipe my thumb across my phone screen, waking it up. My mind on my phone, I cannot react when my feet slip out from under me.

My feet fly up as my body falls down. I stare in horror as Ryan attempts to break my fall, to protect my head, but he can’t get across the room in time. He watches as the back of my head bounces on the polished concrete floor. Panic floods my veins.

“Fuck!” Miguel shouts, emerging from the back room.

“Get towels,” Ryan orders, pointing for him to turn around.

“Lie still,” Ryan instructs me.

As Ryan's hands hold my shoulders in place, the visions begin. I need to tell him not to touch me, but I can't form the words while the visions hit me like a tsunami.

Tee ball, football, swimming, pool parties…

He scans my scalp, gently moving his fingertips to the back of my head. His fingers pause at the same time I hiss. Pulling his hand away, his fingers are red. He places his palm over the cut despite my groans.

I attempt to get up; he keeps me on the floor with his free arm.

Family Christmases, birth of babies, the four of us golfing…

“Easy. You could have a neck or spine injury,” he warns.

“I’m fine,” I spit, finally able to form words. “I can wiggle my toes and my fingers. Stop touching me!”

Miguel returns with two white hand towels. Ryan immediately replaces his hand with a towel; I take advantage of his movement to ignore his concern and sit up. I squeeze my eyes shut tight.

Wine tastings, the Espys, investments…

“I’m fine,” I state, unable to stop the visions from playing rapidly in my brain.

Ryan shakes his head. “You’re bleeding,” he argues. “You need stitches.”

“No, I don’t,” I bite.

Ryan places the palm of his hand over my wound, showing me the blood-soaked towel.

“Head wounds bleed a lot…” I spout. Then, my eyes roll backwards, and the world goes dark.
