Penelope

“That space is amazing! Are you sure you want to give it to me?” I ask Frankie for the millionth time as the car stops in front of her house. “You could rent it as a storefront or something, not that you need the money.”

“Alex picked that space specifically for you. If you don’t want it, you tell him.”

I stop short of the front door, “Are you serious?” I look over my shoulder waiting for the punchline of the joke. There is no way Alex would give me such a beautiful space.

“Yes, I’m serious. It’s not the original space my father promised me would be available for you,” Frankie huffs as she threads her arm through mine and opens the front door. “I wasn’t supposed to tell you but Alex bought that space for you and only for you. If you refuse it, he’ll probably sell it and buy you another one.”

As she pulls me through the door, my eyes immediately lock with Alex’s. A small smirk crosses his face, he probably heard everything his sister said. I pull my arm from Frankie’s and run right to Alex and jump into his arms. “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.” I pepper kisses across his face.

Someone clears their throat to my right, I turn to give them a piece of my mind when I notice Mr. Giordano and another gentleman standing there. Shit. Frankie’s tinkling laughter at my mortification fills the room.

“I’m sorry,” I mumble as I unwrap myself from Alex’s body and he lowers me to the floor. I can’t bring myself to look at him, but he lifts my chin and thankfully he is smiling down at me.

“I’m glad you like it,” he places a kiss on my forehead before turning me toward his father and their guest. “Declan, this is my girlfriend Penelope Star.”

Girlfriend? I reach my hand out, waiting for him to shake it. He looks down at my hand, then between Alex and I, a calculating look crosses his features. Alex pulls me tightly into his side.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Star. Alessandro is a very lucky man.” Tension fills the air between us. Frankie notices and steps closer to Alex and I. “If you will excuse me, I have another appointment to get to.” Declan gives us a small bow before heading out the open front door, not bothering to close it behind him.

Alex reaches into his pocket for his phone, hits a few buttons before bringing it to his ear. I begin to pull away, but he pulls me back into his body, “Marcus, follow Declan. He is up to something.” I hear a few garbled words in response before Alex ends the call.

“I just lost my husband for hours,” Frankie grumbles as she steps around us and places a kiss on her father’s cheek. “I’m going to check in with Lucia and see if she needs any help with dinner. Why don’t you join me, Penny?” Frankie grips my wrist pulling me from her brother’s grasp.
