Kimberly Summer wiped her palms on her slacks to dry them. She’d rinsed the lunch dishes and popped them into the dishwasher. “Okay, Lou, you’re watching the girls, remember?” she said as she stepped into the living room. Lou had a beer perched upon his belly and his eyes on the TV where slightly more ambitious men were fishing on a river.

“What?” Lou said.

“The girls. Remember? I’m going for a big shop down in Dundee, remember? Remember? Tell me you remember.”

Lou took a sip from his Heineken can and swallowed. “Sure thing, I remember. I was distracted…where are the girls?”

Kimberly took a deep breath. She reminded herself that they caught the sonofabitch who was out there murdering children and she could relax some. Still, leaving the kids with Lou was almost asking for trouble. Perhaps it was better to bring them along…but the endless nagging and fits in the toy section and the candy section and Mommy! Mommy! Mommy! No.

“They’re in their room. I need you to watch them. I’ll be back before supper,” she said.

“Perfect,” Lou said. He lifted his can to his lips again.

Distantly, the sound of Sonic the Hedgehog gathering rings worked like a location ping to a metal detector. Even Lou had to hear it.

“Right. Okay.”

Kimberly grabbed her purse and a cardigan and was out the door. She climbed into her Audi wagon and backed out the short driveway. She switched from the pop station to the country station and hummed along to a Brooks & Dunn song about a little country girl rocking their world. She pulled into the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru for a coffee and a cookie.

“See ya later, Mrs. Summers,” said the young woman working the till and window. She was a girl who’d been in Sunday School back when Kimberly had taught—in the years before she became a mother.

She rolled out of Chester River and then passed through Millerton. The old highway was all but dead, which was a bit of a surprise given that it was Saturday afternoon. From the radio came John Denver. She recognized the voice but not the song. She hummed along anyway, until she heard a thump and then a hiss.

“Poop,” she said and signaled to her right. She pulled onto the shoulder and waited a moment before getting out. Lou had wanted to get a bag phone, but she’d talked him out of it. The cost didn’t meet the necessity of it, she’d said. “Dang it!” She slammed a palm against the steering wheel before withdrawing her keys from the ignition and climbing out of the wagon.

She opened the hatchback and dug free the spare tire. Thankfully, the trouble was on the passenger’s side. She then pulled out the heavy little jack and its lug iron/handle. She looked at the thing and then looked around. Not a vehicle in sight. She’d never changed a tire before…but the shop guys who usually serviced her car were idiots, so it couldn’t be that tough.

Kimberly got down on her knees next to the wheel and wondered if she had to take the old wheel off before jacking up the car.
