Chapter 7 - Angry Training

Angry training is not training when you are angry about something; it is about teaching you how to deal with an attack from a person or persons who are clearly not going to be gentle about what they are doing. It is about teaching you how to deal with an angry person. The following guidelines are to be learned and practiced if you are to successfully fend off an attack.

Before you do battle with an opponent, exhaust all other options first. Doing battle should be the absolute last course of action – don’t get draw in to a physical fight if there is no need

If your opponent shows no signs of stopping, get yourself into the correct battle stance. Turn your body sideways so that your dominant shoulder is facing your opponent. Raise your fists up to guard your body and your head but not so that your vision is obstructed.

Learn how to obstruct an attack. To stop a punch from making contact with you, open your hand and push the approaching fist away. You will most likely still get struck but you can deflect the punch away from an area that could cause you significant damage, such as your head, groin belly or kidneys

Learn how to counterattack. Don’t go for the “wild hook” type of punch, you know the one, where you throw your arm out in a big “C” shape. From your battle position, your punch has to come from the center of the body. It is natural to expect the punch to come in quick and for you to strike back quick so do not leave your arm out in the middle of nowhere, making it an easy target. You can kick out to avert an attack or do your own damage but remember that your kick has to come from the foot in the battle position. Raise your leg up and snap it out, bringing it back quickly, out of harm’s way.

You must learn the correct way to make a fist. This might seem like a stupid thing to have to learn; after all, we all know how to make a fist, don’t we. However, what you have to understand is the right way to punch out with the fit in the right position to stop you from hurting yourself. Make a fit now; I will pretty much guarantee that your fingers are curled in and your thumb is either wrapped around the top of your index finger or tucked underneath your fingers. Both are incorrect positions and both can lead to a broken thumb. You must position your thumb around your fingers, and rest it on or below the middle and index fingers. Also remember to keep your wrist straight when you toss a punch out as this can also stop you from hurting yourself

Give the appearance of being strong. Your posture is vital here; you must keep your back straight and keep a reasonable rate of strolling. If you appear to be hurrying or darting about, you will look suspicious and you will look scared.
