Trees came at them from all around. There were more than a hundred of the humanoid, sapling-type demons, but there were also many that were much larger. From behind, the dry oak lumbered down the path toward them, roading and bellowing like an angry bull. From all sides, the humanoid sapling demons charged in, while from the front, a group of three larger trees attacked in formation.

Further back, there were many much larger trees, but these seemed to be holding back for the moment. There were too many of them, and they couldn’t all attack at once. They seemed to want to let the smaller, more maneuverable ones attack first.

Alaria was forced to step in now. There were too many of the enemy for her to take a back seat and let Mia and Beth handle the fight. She waded in, swinging Skyfang from side to side and cutting her way efficiently and without remorse or hesitation through the press of attacking enemies.

For her part, Mia began using Inferno to good effect. The press was at risk of closing around her and Beth, but Alaria’s attack drew the attention of the monsters and they focused on her instead. Mia sent a rapid succession of Inferno blasts at the press of foes nearest her, clearing some space. Every time she hit with the spell, it increased slightly in power, and the fifth blast was so loud and powerful that it rocked the ground under her feet.

“Switch up!” Alaria shouted. “Switch up! You’ll wreck yourself if you just use the same one over and over!”

It was a well-known feature of destructive magic that the same spell used again and again in quick succession caused the spell to increase in power, but also increased the amount of mana each casting needed to draw from the casting mage. Mia knew this in theory, but she’d never tested it in practice, and Alaria could tell that Mia was at risk now of falling prey to the allure of more and more powerful spells.

It was too easy for a mage - particularly a novice - to forget the danger of this magic and overdo it, depleting their mana and destroying their chances of fighting again for days.

Mia heeded Alaria’s warning. She nodded once in acknowledgement and switched to Firebolt, a much more targeted spell. With this spell, she concentrated her fire on the three larger foes, the ones who were on the road, blocking the way, but not attacking just yet.

They were waiting in the wings, however, and so Mia concentrated on them. Fireball was a less draining spell, and so she managed a few in quick succession before she needed to change to something else. Next, she moved over to Ice Spike, sending three-foot-long javelins of razor-sharp, steel-hard ice to smash into the large demons.
