Chapter 11

“You motherfucker.”

Porter leaned on the rail in their boat’s entryway, nearly ripping the rotten wood from the wall. “Hi, Sam.”

Sam stood in the middle of the boat, glasses hanging halfway off his face. His eyes were rimmed red, a crust of dried snot clinging to his unshaved lip.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I’m not.” Porter took a step forward, wincing at the pain in his side.

“You motherfucker.” Sam stumbled toward him, kicking an office chair out of his way, and wrapped Porter into a hug.

Porter grunted against the pain, but he let his brother squeeze as long he could stand it before gently easing him away. “I’m out of it, Sam. I don’t know what Al set me up with, but it was full of soldiers. The job is compromised, and I’m calling it quits.”

“I told you, man. I told you it was deep shit.” Sam stepped back, his hands trembling. “Wei ran that Japanese guy and it started setting off alarms from Shanghai to Tokyo.”

“We need to get out of town, I think. I don’t know what’s going, but I don’t want to be here if the cops come knocking.”

“Uh... Yeah, let me wrap up a few things. Can you give me like, four or five hours?”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. I really, really don’t think it is, Sam.”

“I’m working with Emre and Wei on some things, okay? We think the government is buying off the Triads, and it affects... things.”

Sam, still playing at politics like a college student. Porter slid around his brother and stumbled into his cabin. “How about we shove off now, but we stay close to shore for a while? You’ll still be in mobile range for a few hours, at least.”

“I can’t leave yet. And you need to see a doctor before we go anywhere.”

“No doctors.” Porter shook four blue naproxen pills from a nearly empty bottle. “If what you’re saying is accurate, the Army is looking for someone with a gunshot wound. I don’t need that kind of attention.”

“I still don’t think we should leave.” Sam shuffled over the doorway, watching as Porter peeled out of his body armor. “Wait, you got shot?”

“Yeah.” Porter checked his ribs. A massive purple welt covered his whole right side, and when he touched the bruise, he identified two ribs that were cracked. He wasn’t sure whether he was pissed that he got hurt, or happy that he hadn’t gotten hurt worse. “I’ll live.”

“Jesus, Porter.”

“I said I’ll live.”

“Yeah, I know, I just hate to see you hurt.” Sam let out a long sigh. “You lost your glasses?”

“I swam out under fire. They were a casualty.”

Sam shook his head. “That why you stink so bad?”

“Eau de Hong Kong.”

“You want my backups? It’s the last set I have, though.”

“Yeah, sure.” Leave it to Sam to be worried about his internet access more than his health.

“Grab a shower. I’ll boot up my backup set and have them ready by the time you’re finished.”

Porter unlaced his boots and peeled out of his pants.
