KNOX

My head hurts like a fucker.

Blinding pain ricochets around, making me nauseous.

Even through all that and with Doc taking my vitals, I’m fully aware when Iris enters the treatment room.

I can’t even describe what it is that makes me aware she’s close.

Something connects us.

No words are uttered as I hold a hand out, hoping she’ll take it. A breadth from giving up, I feel her tentative touch on my skin. Her small fingers slide over the palm of my hand. Wrapping my fingers around hers, I tug her closer.

I’m afraid to speak in case I hurl.

I’m afraid to open my eyes in case I hurl.

That wouldn’t be good.

I’ve given up asking myself why I want this woman close. Why I can’t stay away from her.

I admire her.

Greatly.

The responsibility she shoulders with no complaint is unique in a way I haven’t seen before.

The second I regained consciousness on the ice, I wanted her close. At first, I told myself it was so she could reassure Jack and Dani that I was fine. Honestly, I’ve had some humdinger of battles with the ice before. This time though, it scared me. That doesn’t sit well with me, but who the fuck cares?

I have the girl I can’t get out of my head clinging to my hand. I feel her tremble and peel the lid of an eye open to look at her. She chews on her bottom lip, the sight going straight to my groin. Snapping my eye shut, I fill my head with hockey scores. Anything, so I don’t fucking embarrass myself. I mean, it’s not like I can shove my hand into my pants and rearrange the cup pinching my flesh with Doc and Iris here.

Perhaps you’d like it better if Iris put a hand in your pants!

Fuck me!

Doc loudly clears his throat.

“What?” I hiss, clenching my hand when Iris goes to pull her hand free. To Iris, I say, “Stay.” Gently squeezing her hand to make sure she knows what I’m asking, I daintily turn my face to Doc.

“I know you turned the paramedics away, but I’m calling them back. You have a concussion.”

“No, I don’t.”

“Open your eyes and look at me, then.”

I should have known Doc would push it. Even with my eyes shut tight, I know he’s standing there with his arms crossed in front of his chest.

I want to argue.

My body suddenly becomes warm, and I know I’m going to get sick. I’m not going to be able to fight it.

I look desperately at Doc.

“Okay,” he rushes out. “Iris, come with me.”

Doc shoves a sick bowl into my hands and then Iris is pulled from me. I miss her already.

I hear the door slam shut and I puke my guts up. My head feels like it’s being bashed with a jackhammer.

Fuck!

Once I’ve finished, I crank an eye open and shove the bowl onto the side table, covering it with hand towels. I yank my jersey off along with the protective gear beneath, leaving myself bare chested. Desperately
