Adrenaline
Adrenaline is also known as epinephrine. 51 Adrenaline helps us to concentrate and focus. Too low adrenaline levels lead to stress and sleep problems. Adrenaline opens the blood vessels around the heart, but also causes many blood vessels to contract and the heart rate to increase. The hormone also prompts the liver to release more sugar, so that the body is ready for action; consequently, adrenaline prepares the body to cope with threatening situations. Adrenaline is important when the body is in a âfight or flightâ mode because it causes an increased blood flow to the muscles. 52
Adrenaline is released through physical exercise and fear. The hormone can help us to maintain focus, for instance, through keeping to set deadlines for tasks that have to be completed.
To reinforce the use of adrenaline when needed, one can do the following. The brain needs rest; therefore, various meditation techniques can help. For instance, focusing on your breathing can be a way of helping you relax. Another method is to sit down and focus only on the sounds that surround you.

Practical utility value: Focusing on mindfulness strengthens âbeing here nowâ. In this way, you will be more aware of what is happening around you.
