The access to this engine is underneath the cockpit of the boat, with no access through the cockpit floor. So this was the access that the owner had, and this is the way the engine was installed. The engine was installed without cutting any other accesses other than this one, which was rather amazing. I thought this was a very difficult access.
The good thing we see is front and center. There is a cooling water strainer in there. And there is the seawater intake on the through-hull just inside the opening.
There is good access to that valve, which is often ignored in boats. Many boatbuilders often put that valve somewhere where it's very hard to get to. If anything happens and you start to keep water in there, jumping down in the engine compartment trying to find that valve is virtually impossible. Whereas here, it's front and center.
The next thing is the strainer. You would want to see if there's any encumbrance to the water intake of the engine to make sure that it stays cool when it's running. Those seawater strainers should be regularly maintained and emptied out of all debris that can be picked up so that it just ensures cooling water can get in.
Then, of course, in the back there, we can just see, on the right-hand side, the muffler. The good news is that the muffler connections are reasonably accessible. At least we can see them. Those are vital because any interruption in the airtight integrity of that exhaust system means that the boat is potentially pumping gas, which you don't want to breathe, into the engine compartment.
This is a diesel engine. It doesn't create CO, so one wouldnât worry about carbon monoxide poisoning, as with gas engine. But still, having diesel fumes of any kind inside the boat is pretty obnoxious, especially if it's close to the galley.

The next photograph here is one we've seen before and when you see things like this you say, âOops, we've got a problem here.â There is water coming from somewhereâ itâs probably coming in from the hatch on deck.
