But Arthur had not heard the last of Morgan Le Fay. A few days later a lady came to him. She held out a robe. It glowed and shimmered with rubies. Rubies as red as fire. It was the richest, most beautiful thing Arthur had ever seen.

The lady said, “I come from Morgan. Your sister begs you to forgive her. Someone put her under a magic spell. That is why she did what she did. She sends this gift to show her love. It is a magic robe. Whoever wears it will feel no pain.”

King Arthur wanted the beautiful robe. He wanted to believe that Morgan was true to him. He reached for it. The rubies seemed to blaze with light. Then he seemed to hear Merlin’s voice: “What is beautiful is not always good.… Be on your guard.”

“First try it on yourself,” Arthur told the lady.

“Oh, no,” the lady said quickly. “Only the king should wear this robe.”

“Put it on now,” King Arthur said. And he drew his magic sword.

The woman pulled the robe around her shoulders. The instant it touched her, there was a burst of flame. And where she stood only ashes remained.

Arthur stood silent. How close he had been to death! His sister was a powerful enemy. He had escaped her this time. His kingdom was safe. But what of the dangers that lay ahead?
