Etienne

“Get the others,” I said to Cat as I quickly put my trousers back on and grabbed my sword.

I fled from her chambers. The scream had come from across the corridor. Banging and shouting leaked out from the king’s door. Readying my blade, I shoved the door open. Lenora stood on the bed, shrieking at the strange black creature sliding along the floor. Mythos, half-dressed, swiped his sword at another of the same type of creature near the entrance to his dressing chamber. It scurried out of the way and he missed it.

“Etienne, watch out!” Lenora screamed as a third creature flew off the wall toward me.

I ducked and it missed me, crashing to the floor with a squeal.

I scanned the walls, searching for more of their kind. It’d be easy for them to blend in with the dark stone.

Mythos chopped at the creature nearest him, spilling black blood over the rug at his feet.

Lenora had a dagger in her hand, pointing it at the creature climbing the sheets at the foot of the bed.

The creature that’d almost hit me had recovered and crept toward me again. The thing was almost flat, and it appeared round except for when it moved, changing its shape like it was made of slime. Its gleaming dark eyes were almost hidden, completely black like its body. I swung downward at it, but it darted out of the way. Whatever these monsters were, they were bloody fast!

The creature shot through the air, aiming for my face.

I lifted my sword in time to cut clean through the thing.

Black blood sprayed my face as it fell to the floor in two pieces. The smell of rotten meat invaded my nose. Disgusted, I wiped its blood off with my forearm.

I swung around and found the king jumping back from the bleeding creature he’d sliced open. It moved slower, but it wasn’t dead yet.

Our eyes met. “Help Lenora,” he ordered.

My first instinct was always to protect the king, but I would not defy his order. I may not care if Lenora got hurt, but Mythos certainly would.

The mistress almost lost her balance on the soft mattress as she shuffled backward. The creature slithered along the blanket on the bed.

I lunged toward them, my blade coated in the black blood of my last victim. I wasn’t going to make it there fast enough. Mythos’s chambers were too big.

The creature touched Lenora’s toe. She pulled her foot back and, letting out a battle cry, she plunged the dagger into its fleshy body. That awful squeal filled the room as she stabbed it over and over.

“Hey, hey.” I eased her wrist with the blade away from it. “It’s dead.”

The putrid blood had made a mess of the bed.

She let herself fall onto her arse on the mattress, and then, as though remembering she wasn’t the only one in danger, she swung her head around. “Mythos!”

The king’s sword was lodged into the side of a table.

The creature he’d injured lifted itself into an upright position so its underside faced him.
