The Capistrano flip works best with canoes that have good buoyancy. If the Capistrano flip is not effective with your boat, be prepared to utilize other methods of self-rescue. These may include paddling or swimming the swamped canoe to shore where it can be drained. If another canoe is nearby, its occupants can help with a canoe-over-canoe rescue (pages 116–17).

Capistrano Flip: Step 2

• Begin by breaking the air seal by lifting one gunwale.

• Paddlers then kick three times and push the canoe up into the air.

• When the canoe is as high as you can get it, flip up one side to turn the canoe over.

• This will leave the canoe, floating right side up, nearly empty of water, with you holding onto the gunwale.
