It was about nine hours into their seventeen-hour flight and Alicia was miserable. Not only was she jammed in the center seat in between some cowboy wannabe (or used-to-be) and a fifteen-year-old traveling alone for the first time who decided to practice his flirting skills on her (‘I know I may look young, but I’m wiser than my years…’), but she was stressing out about the presentation.

Alicia had stopped off at the office on her way to the airport and had grabbed the flash drive containing the data and the Powerpoint presentation. But, she hadn’t had time to look at it. First, they had to get checked in to the airport, and then, because the office was traveling together, everyone went to eat. She wanted to take a look once she’d gotten on the plane, but the plane’s wifi was down (“Sorry folks. We know it’s an inconvenience, but we will have a movie for ya later.”). The last thing she wanted was to get up in front of the whole company, including her new boss, and give a presentation using slides she’d never seen before.

Fortunately, they had a couple of days of team building exercises planned before the presentation. From what Alicia had heard, this Falls Ranch was going to be a pretty cool place to have an offsite.

Beverly Powers, the head of Human Resources for Catalyst, had come to Australia from America three years ago to take the job. Her nephew, Carlos DeMott was a former private investigator who’d started a therapy ranch in the tiny town of Falls Ranch, Texas. Last summer, before Alicia started working there, Beverly flew back for Carlos’ wedding. After the reception, she was talking with Carlos and his wife Sam about the ranch, and some additional ways it could be used to increase revenue. Sam had come to the ranch when they’d filmed some movie on it, and when she and Carlos got married, they realized that her MBA would be very useful in helping to grow the ranch. The HR director and the MBA started talking about employee and executive offsite training, and before you know it, the idea to start using the ranch as a corporate retreat was born.

Alicia pulled out a brochure from Falls Ranch and started looking at it. There was a main house, and then a back house where some family members evidently lived. A large lake was at the center of the property, and it was surrounded by trees. Alicia could see canoes and wondered if they had some team building thing where you got in a canoe with a colleague and tried to navigate it.

“Is that where you’re going?” the teenager next to her asked.

“Yes.”

“Are you a model?” He looked at her and raised both eyebrows flirtatiously. “You look like a model. Or an actress. Are you related to Nicole Kidman?”

Shaking her head in disbelief at the nerve of this kid, Alicia put in some earbuds and plugged them into the armrest. Even listening to
