Chapter 22

That was a mistake. Waking up with her in my arms and her cheek resting against my bare chest was way too much for me. It made this thing very real. I couldn’t let it be real. This had to be kept at a distance. I couldn’t let myself want this. There was a vulnerability to her that spoke to me. I often felt the same way, and just like her, I tried to hide it from the world. I imagined it was exhausting to constantly be on guard. She came off as this little spitfire with a sharp tongue and a bluntness that bordered on rude, but I saw little chinks in her armor. I wouldn’t exploit them, but I saw them.

I quietly walked out of the bedroom. I picked up my clothes in the living room and quickly dressed. I left her apartment and made sure to lock the door behind me. I jogged downstairs and into the quiet parking lot. The cold air woke me up. I checked the time. It was just after four. It was too late to try and go back to bed for an hour or two.

When I got home, I jumped in the shower to wash away her scent once again. I stepped in front of the mirror and was going to shave when I saw the hickey on my neck. I smirked and touched my fingers to the spot. I tilted my head to the left and saw another one. There was a bite mark on my chest. The woman had been ravenous. And it was better than the first time. I wasn’t into rough sex, but it was a hunger. I had felt it too. The anger between us was passionate. It was the hottest damn thing I’d had.

I quickly shaved and decided to make myself breakfast since I had extra time. Not to mention, I was feeling a little depleted. Last night had expended a lot of energy, and it was worth every bit of it. I knew it was bad. I knew she had reeled me in and sucked me into her orbit. Now I was addicted. I already wanted her again. If she wasn’t in my class, I would be scrambling to find a way to be with her. London was not the type of girl that wanted to settle down. That much was evident in her initial proposal to have sex with me. She didn’t want a boyfriend. She wanted sex and nothing else.

After stuffing my face with a protein-packed breakfast, I grabbed my laptop and signed into my school email. There was an email from the department head stating there was a mandatory meeting this afternoon.

“What the hell?” I muttered as I reread the email.

A pit formed in the bottom of my gut. The email said nothing about what the meeting was about, but it definitely hinted at it being very serious. I checked the time the email was sent. According to the timestamp, it was sent just before midnight.
