COOPER

Ifeel like a new fucking man. I’m limping without a stick. John the physiotherapist said he hasn’t seen someone recover as fast as I have—well, he hasn’t had someone like Lily in his life. I used to think Mom leaving home had put a dent in my heart.

Today I have to face the music and go to my first practice session in months. It used to feel alien to me, but now I realize as the sun beats down mercilessly on the football field, like Lily, I’ve missed football too. I'm stranded on the sidelines, my knee throbbing in sync with the heat. Dad blows the whistle, a sharp sound cutting through the air, marking the start of another punishing practice. My teammates sprint off the field with smiles on their faces as they enjoy the challenge. Making me realize that I never stopped loving football, because I always enjoyed the adrenaline rush after a training session.

It has been eight stressful weeks since the injury, and here I am ready to get back into the game.

"Coop, you're pushing yourself too hard, son. One step at a time…”

I cut him off, my frustration boiling over. “You need more time to be better.”

He sighs, weariness etched in the lines of his face. "Coop, it's tough, but sometimes you gotta face reality."

I shoot up, adrenaline coursing through my veins. "Reality? Reality is me back on that field, making plays, not sitting on my ass watching."

"You know I want you out there, but not at the cost of your health, son. I worry more about you than the game. You’ve only just had the all clear from the docs. I’m not sure you should be on the field just yet.”

I stroll onto the field, cleats sinking into the scorched earth, and the guys turn to look at me, their expressions a mix of disbelief and awe. I can't help but flash a cocky grin. "Miss me?"

"Coop, you sure about this?" Dad asks, that fatherly concern lingering in his tone as if he’s not convinced this is the place for me. I’m disappointed about his reaction. A few weeks ago, he was saying that he couldn’t wait for me to be back on the field, and now it’s as if he doesn’t want me here.

“Just stop being my dad and act like my coach. No favors.”

He sucks in a deep breath as if he’s thinking about my proposition.

I smirk, the fire in my eyes undiminished. "Get ready, Coach, your star player's making a comeback."

He hesitates as he nods his head, but my team, my friends, are just happy to have me back. I must admit, I didn’t realize how much I missed being on the field, until now.

Nothing’s going to get me down.

I’m on fucking fire.
