Chapter Six

The Transfer

Maybe I was spending too much time with Royce, and that’s why I felt like Dre and Stephanie were fooling around behind my back. Whatever Dre and Stephanie talked about the night he invaded her space seemed to have made them a hell of a lot closer. These two went from barely saying hi and bye to best friends in a matter of days.

Stephanie had become Dre’s official beautician and hang out buddy. On nights when I was out with Royce, Dre and Stephanie had been together. They even went as far as eating at the Jeffersons’ family restaurant together every Wednesday and Sunday after Bible study and church.

Stephanie didn’t even speak to me at work unless it was mandatory, nor did she volunteer to pick up the extra work I might’ve been slacking on like she usually did. Something about her had changed, and before I could discover what it was, she volunteered a portion of it.

“Hey, Savannah, do you have a minute?”

Stephanie was wearing the biggest smile I had ever seen on her face. My first thought was she closed a huge deal that would force my partners and me to make her one, or she had gotten some good dick and wanted to brag about it.

“Sure, love, meet me in my office in ten minutes. I need to run to my car really fast.”

There wasn’t a true need to run to my car, but since she hadn’t said shit to me in weeks, I wanted her to know she wasn’t a priority. Besides, I was the mario-nettist in our dying friendship, and she was the fool on the strings. I controlled her moves; it would never be the other way around. Making her wait gave me an opportunity to check on my car. I still hadn’t taken it to be looked at and wanted to see if it would start on its own. It was almost time for lunch, and Royce needed to eat. I was enjoying being the meal he wanted and had to make sure I could deliver it.

Like magic, the car cranked without a hitch. I had my radio on the slow jams station on my ride to work, and when the engine cranked, one of my jams had just come on. I didn’t know the lyrics nor the artist’s name, but his moans entwined in his singing made my panties wet. That reason alone made it one of my favorite songs.

I hummed along to the beat more than I kept up with the lyrics until the commercials came on. There was one for a new weight loss drug, some old-school concert, and another for a free psychic reading. I punched in the number for the reading the second time the woman’s voice made the announcement and put it on speakerphone. I had never called in to one before, but I needed to buy myself time, and if the call lasted longer than the ten minutes I gave Stephanie, it was fine by me.
