Chapter Ten

A dragon roar from the forest caught our attention as Levi rushed back to me.

“The circle!” we said.

“We can’t port to it. We don’t know what is going on there,” Levi said.

“So, we run,” I replied.

“Or you could fly,” a woman’s voice spoke behind me. Madam Luella Specter stood behind us holding two adult griffins with saddles and harnesses.

“Go! We will meet you there,” Sully said. He patted Nick on the cheek. “The fight isn’t over, Brother.” Nick nodded.

Levi and I mounted the griffins which seemed much like horses until they lifted into the air above the trees where we could see the dragon flying over the field. He wasn’t unleashing a fiery attack, but the area did seem to be burning. As we flew closer, I could see where one side of the forest burned. The flames licked into the night sky. The dragon saw us approaching, but Mike held him back. As we soared over the field, my heart lurched.

The circle wasn’t secure and three red cloaked witches pushed toward Aydan and Winnie who stood beside the center stone. It glowed bright blue. A white wolf stood in front of them crouched ready to strike. I turned the griffin downward, diving at the center of the circle. As I approached the stone, I pulled the griffin up, flipping off his back, and landing behind my children with my blades drawn. Levi hit the ground beside me with his sword.

Their cloaks covered their faces as they chanted. I looked around frantically for any sign of Jenny, Ella, Wendy, or Nestor. I saw no one but my children. No wolves. No hogs. Just a lone circling dragon and my family. The witches didn’t acknowledge our presence, so I waved at Mike. He swooped down landing in the field. Levi grabbed Winnie who had wrapped herself around my leg and ran to the Solomonar.

“Aydan, come on,” Levi called to him.

“No, I’m going to fight,” Aydan said gritting his teeth.

“Little bird, I need you to fly,” I said softly. I saw his shoulder slump. When he turned to face me, his eyes begged me to stay, but I shook my head.

“Aydan, now!” Levi urged.

Aydan gave in and ran to join Winnie on the dragon.

“Callum,” I coaxed. He snuffed and stomped his paw on the ground. I turned back to Mike. “Go!” The dragon lifted off into the air, carrying my two youngest.

I stepped off the stone, flanking Callum. Levi came up on his left. The ground began to rumble under our feet. I reached for Winter through the stone and bounded at the center witch. Mable lifted her eyes to me with glee. She pulled two daggers much like my own out of her cloak. The black smoky blades looked like the one Brockton used.

I also reached out to the four elemental stones that I had been given. I would need them with these three. Propelling my way toward her with a force of wind, she dodged me, but didn’t need to because I was thrown off balance by a blast of magic from my right.
