Chapter 13
I swept past the men and women working at clearing the crimson feelers without hesitation, running over the writhing mass of flexible limbs as those workers called out in surprise. The entire corridor seemed to move beneath my feet, making footing unstable and it stank of death and decay.
Those questing members peeled away from the wall, the ceiling and the floor, as they felt my presence and reached for me. I ran on past them, moving fast to keep ahead of their ravenous reach as I turned into the next corridor.
My axe swung, biting into the appendage reaching for me and cutting cleanly through it. Foul ichor burst from the severed limb, black and oily as it coated the head of my axe. I swung again and another tip was cut free.
They were reaching for me from all around, rising up to coil around my ankles, moving sinuously like a nest of snakes seeking to wrap around their prey. I swung my axe, again and again, severing any that came close and keeping moving as speed was my only real advantage.
I swung into the final corridor and skidded to a halt, stumbling and almost falling amongst the tangled limbs. Dozens of them were pulling away from the surfaces of the corridor and reaching towards me. Too many to slip past.
The injector was stuck through a loop on the combat harness I wore, and I pulled free my knife and held it in my left hand. Razor-sharp, it would slice through the fleshy tendrils as easily as my axe. I sucked in a deep breath of the foul-smelling air and moved forward.
Each of those fleshly limbs got thicker the further away from the tip it was which made them harder to cut through. I aimed then, for just a few inches from the tip, slashing and hacking with axe and knife.
A stinging bite on my upper arm had me slamming myself against the wall, trapping the crimson appendage between my body and the wall as I used my knife to cut through it. Not fast enough as it extended fang-like teeth and tore at the flesh of my arm.
My knife cut through it and I pulled back, away from the wall. The barbed tip was still attached to my arm and I left it there as it was acting like a plug over the wound, stopping my blood from flowing freely.
Another bite on my ankle, the barbs hooking onto the thick leather of the combat boots I wore. I swung my hand-axe, cutting it away and swinging upwards in one quick movement, cutting away another feeler before it could reach me.
I was struggling to cut a path through them and behind me, I was more than aware of how many of those limbs were turning back towards me, seeking to feed. Still, I refused to give up as I swung again and again, hacking at limb after limb, my clothing soon coated with the oily-black blood.
A barbed tip sank into my neck and I sliced through the attacking limb before any real damage could be done.
