Chapter 10

Zoë almost welcomed the intrusion into the chaos that arced between her and Sean, forcing them to take a giant step back from the sense of impending panic that vibrated the very air around them after they’d made love—or whatever it was they’d just done.

Almost. Because her female urge to communicate, to hash things out, felt acutely frustrated. But…shutting that door was probably just as well. Talking and hashing would do neither of them any good. It was what it was. And what it was, was explosive…and temporary.

So she went below, quickly showered in the microscopic cabinette, pulled her dress over her head and stroked on some lipstick and mascara. There. Back to normal. Well, as normal as she could be without underwear.

Except her body didn’t feel normal. She could still sense the imprint of Sean’s powerful hands on it, holding and caressing, his tongue licking and his teeth biting. Even after her shower, the scent of him clung to her skin, claiming her, marking her as his. His possession. His mate.

Except of course she wasn’t. And she needed to get over it.

She turned from the mirror and caught him watching her from beneath a dark scowl. He must have jumped into the ocean to wash because his tawny hair was wet and sticking out from being rubbed with a towel. His skin was beaded with drops of water. He’d put on a pair of low-riding jeans and clutched a deep blue shirt in his fist.

“You’re going to wrinkle that,” she said, the first words she’d uttered for hours. Other than crying out his name earlier. Her face heated at the swift, dazzling memory.

His gaze jerked from her cheeks down to the wrinkled shirt in his hand. He shrugged and slipped it over his wet shoulders, then raked his fingers through his long hair. “Ready?”

She glanced out of the porthole and saw a clutch of low thatched roofs. He must have tied up at a dock while she was in the shower. “As ever,” she replied.

It turned out they’d put in at a fancy gated community attached to an exclusive resort and golf club that catered to the wealthy expatriates who lived on the picture-perfect garden island. At the clubhouse Sean was greeted like an old friend, one obviously well-acquainted with the predominantly male patrons gathered at the bar for their nineteenth hole—who proceeded to slap him on the back and joke about his being arrested for murder. News apparently traveled fast in the Fiji expat community. But the men clearly did not take the charge seriously. Curious eyes turned to Zoë as he introduced her to them as his “friend,” but brows raised knowingly when he kept a proprietary arm firmly around her waist.

She could just imagine the conversation that ensued after an elegant Frenchwoman named Madame Cuvet strolled in and Sean smoothly finessed her into taking Zoë “shopping” at a trio of swanky clothing boutiques that flanked the lobby of the club.

“I completely ruined two of Zoë’s dresses,” he explained to a rumble of masculine chuckles.
