The guard buzzes him through. Dante strides to the table in the visitor area, heart hammering his eardrums.

What the hell is he doing in prison? On this side of the bars, no less.

Matteo takes a seat across from him. His green eyes match Jen’s, and Dante draws a breath to get his bearings.

It’s been days since the chili dinner. Days since he held Jen in his arms and kissed her. He still feels his lips burning. Wonders if Matteo can see it.

“I saw Sebastian.” Dante clears his throat. “He’s set up a dental office in town.”

“I know.”

Fuck. What else does he know?

“Says he’s on the straight and narrow now.” Dante will believe that when he sees it. “Settling down, looking for a nice suburban life.”

Matteo snorts. “Right.”

He lets his eyes scan the room, taking in the concrete floors and bars on the doors. It’s his first time coming here. First time taking this sort of risk. He wouldn’t have come if he didn’t have to. Some messages are too sensitive to deliver on the phone.

He clears his throat again. “I checked into our friend.”

Matteo flinches at the word friend. “And?”

They’re being careful. It’s different on the phone with Dovlanese nicknames masking real ones. But here, with guards pacing four feet away, he needs to tread carefully. “Your intel’s correct. Happened Friday morning.”

Reggie Dowling’s brother walked out a free man. Record expunged, no harm, no foul. It curdles Dante’s blood.

Matteo scans his face. “Who picked him up?”

“Not our guy.” Dowling’s too cagey to claim his own brother. “Sebastian staked it out.”

Both brows lift. “You’re working with Seb on this?”

“He’s got connections we don’t. Skills we don’t.” Dante pauses. “Besides. I’ve got this tooth I need checked for—”

“Jesus.” Matteo sighs. “All right, yeah. That makes sense. The Dentist knows what he’s doing.”

With more than oral hygiene. “It’s easier that way,” Dante adds. “Keeping him close.”

“Understood.” Matteo stares in silence.

How much does he know?

Can he guess Dante’s had lunch with Jen every day this week? That she left a flannel shirt at the bunkhouse when she came to share some lasagna. That he fell asleep with the shirt on his pillow like some lovesick kid. The shirt smells like hay and honey and her, and he woke up smiling like a goddamn fool.

There’s so much he wants to say to Teo. To tell him Jen’s the most amazing woman he’s ever met. That sunlight in her hair is the exact same shade as the gold arching the palace doors in Dovlano. That when he sees her, his chest feels like someone filled it with warm pudding.

But he can’t say any of that, so he closes his eyes. “I probably shouldn’t be here.”

“Nope.”

He takes a breath. “Neither should you.”

Matteo says nothing, and Dante opens his eyes. “I’ll fix this, okay?”

As he gets up to leave, he’s not sure which problem he means.
