CHAPTER 15

RAVEN’S POV

I’m not dead. That’s a plus.

It’s hard to breathe, both from the smoke in the air and the weight on top of me. Hard to see, but I catch glimpses of flashing lights. The weight on me moves. It also smells like whiskey and aftershave.

Why does he keep ending up on top of me?

“Off.” I groan and shove him aside at the same time.

“Man, that was loud,” he says. “Are your ears ringing? Mine are ringing.”

We get to our feet and survey the situation. It’s bad. The corridor is unrecognizable. Lights flashing, flickering… Somewhere, a siren is blaring. Everything is comprised of metal, so nothing is burning. But smoke and heat from the blast still cling to the air, which both impedes my visibility and my ability to take in a good lungful of oxygen.

I take off my mask. No point in a secret identity anymore. I’m just trying to stay alive.

“Okay, what’s the plan?” he asks.

Seriously?

I head back down the corridor to where we started, by the elevator. I don’t see a door leading to an elevator or an elevator shaft. All I see is wreckage and twisted metal. Damn.

“There has to be another way out. It can’t just be one elevator,” I say. “There has to be stairs or possibly a second elevator.”

I’m not sure if I’m talking to myself or to him. Maybe a little of both.

He says, “I would think so. Then again, it’s not like Master Mind had the fire marshals out here when he was building this place, making sure everything is up to code.”

Don’t panic. How many minutes left? Have to find a way out. Get up top. Did they leave without us? I don’t trust Master Mind (a little convenient that he left us behind with an exploding android). But Amazonia and Cold Snap wouldn’t abandon us.

Think, dammit…

Meredith materializes, her form not as solid as usual. She flickers; her voice crackles and echoes.

“What has happened? I am unable to send the elevator down and it is difficult to transmit to this area.”

Dark Revenger says, “Tommy blew up. Big time.”

“Meredith, is there another elevator? Another way out?”

She points.

“Follow the corridor to the end. If you are able to pry back the plating on the wall, there is an exhaust tunnel that runs bottom to top of the base. I can alert the others you will be coming that way and they may be able to assist you from the top. However, you must move quickly.”

I’m already running. And Dark Revenger is right behind me.

The section of wall Meredith directed us to is as nondescript as the other walls, but there’s a sliver of a gap around the edges, a panel of sorts, much like the one Master Mind had removed to get to his hidden lab/hiding spot. I dig the point of a dagger into the small gap and twist and pry at the same time. It bends, though not enough to do any good.

“Here. Stand back, hottie.”

Dark Revenger places the oversized gloves he’s wearing next to the hole I made and furrows his brows.
