Chapter Thirty-Five

Charles sat nervously in the passenger seat as Sullivan drove. His face was in pain, and he felt humiliated to have been beaten up once again — though he’d grown used to the feeling of shame.

He had offered a child to the man who had murdered his wife — but it wasn’t because of his debt, as he’d led Sullivan to believe. He had made a deal with Hugo for other reasons. And, whilst Sullivan recklessly negotiated the roads with no concern for the welfare of Charles’ car, Charles thought back to the exchange he’d had in his flat just hours ago.

“Where are you taking her?” Charles had asked.

Hugo had looked back at him with the are you kidding me? look that intimidated Charles so much.

“Are you taking her overseas?” Charles asked.

One of Hugo’s acquaintances carried the kicking and screaming girl over his shoulder and out of his flat.

“Wh – where are you taking her? Is she going where you take other girls? Are you leaving the country?”

No one reacted, even slightly, to Charles’ questions.

“Please, let me come.”

Hugo had let the others filter out, then paused, turning to Charles.

“Please.”

He folded his arms, waiting dubiously for a decent reason he should help him.

“I appreciate that you consider the debt settled, I do. Really. It’s just… my life here has been destroyed.”

Hugo looked unsympathetic.

Charles was used to this, even from other criminals. There was a hierarchy amongst criminals, and, as a man who had been convicted for possession of child pornography, he was at the bottom.

There was no reason for Hugo to help him.

After all, last time Hugo had helped him escape prison time, Charles had entered the agreement knowing he hadn’t the funds to pay for this favour. The one person who naively believed Charles was innocent, his wife, had paid the price.

“I’m on the register here. People find out who I am, and they don’t want me. I can’t leave the country as it breaks my parole. Barely a month goes by without my car being wrecked, or someone graffitiing on my door, and I–”

“I am waiting for the reason I should give a fuck.”

“Because… you helped me before.”

“Because I thought you could pay me for my help. I am not inclined to help paedophiles out of the goodness of my heart.”

“I’m not a paedophile. I just made a mistake.”

“We’re settled. Don’t let me see you again.”

Hugo turned to leave.

“What if I deliver you the man too?”

Hugo paused.

“We have the man. He is being seen to.”

“But–”

“Goodbye.”

Then Hugo left. Charles had assumed the man was now dead — so imagine his surprise when the man had returned.

Charles hadn’t a way to contact Hugo. He was hardly going to take his phone out and start texting.

But he hadn’t needed to.

The man had somehow figured out where Hugo would take the girl; miraculously conjuring up a huge bit of luck.

From the moment Charles had seen them in the pub, talking about Hugo, he had felt it — these people were his salvation. Just imagine if he delivered the man to Hugo…

He could find somewhere abroad to start a new life.
