Chapter Five

Anticipated Damage

SECTION ONE. Data Analysis and Digital Storage. It was a huge chunk out of the second floor of Epsilon Complex. The room was sleek and modern with low lighting and about a dozen workstations with banks of huge monitors. Just about a quarter of the room was sectioned off for servers. Even through the reinforced acrylic shielding, Tom could hear the rumble of the massive fans keeping the room cool … and the hiss of the cleaners venting hot air into the frigid Antarctic afternoon.

There were a group of chairs arranged in a semi-circle around what looked to be Cami’s workstation. As the section lead, she garnered the biggest single area in the small cubicle farm. Tom and Kelly sat down and were joined by the rest of the crew from the Hariwulf.

What was left of it, anyway.

“Ahem,” Cami cleared her throat, walking across the floor space to her desk. She wasn’t trying to get anyone’s attention; it was simply a nervous tick. “Here is your backup. The main stuff, we’ll be looking at on the monitors.”

She walked around the area handing out small, blue binders. They had the Allied Genetics logo emblazoned on the front in gold. The three-ring binders were only about an inch thick with what felt like 100 pages pressed inside. Tom found it odd that there were seven people in attendance outside of Cami – but she had printed out ten copies of the mission report. She put the extra three copies on a corner of her desk and sat down, deftly spinning in her chair so her back was to the workstation, and she faced the group as they started taking their seats.

“Sorry about the folding chairs,” Cami said with a half-smile. “I didn’t have time to wheel over a bunch of seats from the conference room. Nearest one is the floor above us.”

Kelly, for her part, simply smiled and nodded that she should continue. Cami nodded back.

“So, you have the printout of a bunch of stuff. Transcripts of the communication from Hariwulf to control. Internal communication. Mission logs. Depth analysis.” She paused for a moment. “I did put a few image printouts in there, but you’re going to see the actual feed in just a couple minutes. It’s just included for your reference.”

She turned her back to the group but slid her chair over so they could see the huge monitor in the center of her command console. There was one big 30” screen with three 23” screens floating above and flanking it. The three upper screens were arranged in a curve. Right now, all four screens showed the same thing: two windows that could not be more different. One was a simple black screen with a command prompt politely blinking. The other was a graphical user interface (GUI) menu system. There were a few folders lined up in there.

“Alright, here we go,” Cami said as she hovered her mouse cursor over the first folder in the lineup and double-clicked.

“I won’t bore you with the play-by-play,” she said.
