Chapter 16

Kiernan

Kiernan looked into his mate’s bright hazel eyes and swallowed. “Dragon shifters and sea serpent shifters…well, I guess lots of other shifters, too…um, believe in the concept or the tradition of fated mates.”

He had her attention. Now what? Should he simply tell her the two of them were mates? Or go into more detail first, like mentioning the benefits?

His sexy researcher seemed to be waiting for more details. After a pause, she asked, “And you want me to know about this tradition…why?”

Damn it. He couldn’t do it. He couldn’t just blurt out the fact they were mates. Wasn’t there some way to ease into this? Wasn’t that what he’d been doing? He glanced at the expectant look on her face. Her question echoed in his brain.

Say something. “You can’t imagine how rare it is. Finding the one person, out of all the people in the world, that destiny planned for you.”

“Shifter destiny. If you had to factor in all the humans too, then the odds would be astronomical.”

“Our family, the Rudraige clan, has experienced extraordinarily good luck recently. Since the start of the new year, three of my cousins, directors at Muirdris, have met their mates.”

“Did I read somewhere that all of your Rudraige cousins are men?”

“That’s right.”

“So, all three of the new female mates are…uh, what...sea dragons? Where did they find three female sea dragon shifters in six months?”

“First, shifters could have same sex mates. But in this case, you’re correct, all the new additions to the clan are female. And while I believe there are other instances of mixed mating, in our case, none of the three new mates are shifters. They’re all human women.”

“Seriously?” She seemed to ponder. “Would it be rude to ask how that works?” Her lovely blush was back. At the sight, his cock sprang to attention. He and his sea dragon couldn’t wait to show Delia exactly how they would increase the sea dragon shifter population.

He and all his cousins had hatched from eggs. Not possible when one of the mated pair was a human. Their sea dragon-ling would gestate just like humans, be born in human form, and then experience the first shift at about five years old.

“Any of their offspring will be born and develop like a normal human child.”

She seemed to relax, and he added, “The life-mate relationship usually develops quickly but then it lasts forever. If we do manage to find our mates, it’s for the rest of our lives.”

“Y’all beat the divorce rate odds, too? Bet the new human mates were happy to hear that. After they’d adjusted to the fact, they’d fallen in love with sea dragons.”

He wasn’t ready to address the question of humans falling in love over time versus instant mate recognition. Better side-step. “I haven’t met any of them.”

“No? Why not?”

“Sea dragons are extremely territorial. That’s why Muirdris Shipping is divided up, and each cousin controls a district or a cluster of ports.”

“What about attending the weddings?”

“If I’m invited, I’ll go.” He watched Delia out of the corner of his eye.
