The white rook on a8 is threatening the black knight. The black queen is covering the knight. The white queen is threatening the black knight through the black queen.

The white rook can capture the knight and fork the black king and queen.

Black has only one legal move to make: to capture the rook. In the next move, white queen will capture the black queen and put the king in corridor mate.

GRANDMASTER TIP

The pieces are your friends! So be considerate of them while you are playing. The queen is a demanding lady; although she is good at multitasking, she needs some room to do so. The king needs protection. Do not let him out to fight until the streets are safe (during the end game). The rook is made for offense, not defense. The bishop is like a colorblind sniper who is very good when working together with your other sniper. The knight is scary and erratic, like a spy. It is at its best when kept on a fixed point. The pawns are the game’s troopers and can never move backward. You should therefore think carefully before deciding to move them.
