For the second time in as many days, Bel handed her clothes over to be bagged as evidence. On their return trip to the mansion, Griffin called the lab to request they dig into Pannâs financials, and when they parked, the techs collected the evidence from the detectives and then helped them sneak into the guest bathrooms so as not to alarm the Darling family.
âThanks for the clothes,â Olivia said as she exited the bathroom. The women were thankfully close in size. Bel was slightly taller with a more muscular frame, but her clothes fit Gold well enough.
âAfter yesterday, I thought it best to bring a few changes,â Bel said as they headed back downstairs.
âWhat happened yesterday?â Gold asked. âGriffin wonât say much, and you wonât say anything, but Iâm not stupid. I saw the aftermath of those traps. I saw what The Tinker did with the car trunk today.â
âOliviaâ¦â
âWhy wonât you tell me?â her partner pressed. âWhy do I have this horrible feeling that you almost died? Especially after how you reacted at the car.â
âYesterday was stressful, thatâs all,â she lied.
âOkay⦠but you know if something was wrong, you could talk to me, right?â
âI know.â Bel wrapped her arm around her partnerâs shoulders as they arrived on the first floor.
âIâm just looking out for you,â Olivia continued. âAfter everything with Abel, I donât want to throw you to the wolves and pretend youâre fine because the therapist cleared you to return to work.â
âYouâre a good friend.â Bel smiled, squeezing her affectionately. âI was nervous when Griffin hired you. Not because of your resume, but because I cared deeply for the man you replaced. I think my old partner sent you to me, though. I promise, if I need you, Iâll tell you, and Iâm glad youâre here now. But please donât open any more trunks.â
âI wasnât planning on it.â Gold smirked. âIâll be in the kitchen with the others.â She disappeared down the hall, and Bel moved into the living roomâs entrance. Cerberus lay on a nest of fluffy blankets and pillows in the middle of the floor, but it was Michaelâs location that made her smile. The ten-year-oldâs head rested on the pitbullâs chest as he watched TV, and he periodically would slip a piece of beef jerky out of the bag resting on his belly, take a huge bite, and then push the rest into her dogâs mouth.
âWatching them makes you want to cry, right?â Wendy said, tiptoeing to stand next to Bel. âThank you so much for bringing him. Michaelâs still clinging to me, but I think the fact that your dog is this muscular pitbull makes him feel safe.â
âHeâs very protective,â Bel said. âHeâll watch over your brother, and thereâs something about his gentle soul that makes everything better.â
âI was nervous when Eamon helped him out of the car, but youâre right. Even I feel safer having him around, although youâll have to put him on a diet after this.â Wendy gave an apologetic chuckle. âYou probably donât want him eating all these snacks, but I canât bring myself to stop them.
