Chapter Twelve

Ares followed Alec into his room. Doc Max was watching over Helios and Levi. He kicked everyone else out of the room to get some sleep.

“I know you are still unhappy with me. Do you wish for me to get another room?” Offered, he was just far enough in the room for the door to close.

“I’m not unhappy with you, I’m mad. But no, I don’t want you to get another room. I offered to share with you when you came, I’m not going to kick you out just because of my feelings.” Alec replied.

Ares took a few steps further into the room before asking, “Do you wish to speak about it?”

Alec ripped his shirt over his head, swearing when it dragged over his eye. “Not really, because it’s not my place to get mouthy about the situation. You’re my boss, I may not like your decisions but I don’t have a say in them.”

Ares picked up the cream Doc Max had given Alec for bruising and walked over to the man. “Sit.” He instructed.

Tired of fighting, Alec sat on the edge of the bed and allowed Ares to apply the cream to his black eye and bruises. The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife.

“I know you think I was wrong, not fully updating Helios and Levi about the threat and attacks.”

“Yes, you were. How can someone know what to watch for, if they don’t know the full extent of the threat?”

“They had bodyguards.”

Alec jumped up from the bed in anger, just barely missing Ares. “And look how that worked out! They were still drugged! They were still taken! And they were still hurt! Dom and Roman didn’t even know the full extent of what they were protecting them from or I doubt they’d have been in different rooms. They could have died tonight, so easily, because they didn’t know the whole story! And it was against them! Why should the reason for an attack against them be lied about or not explained?”

Ares watched the man as he ranted, pacing the room in his rage.

“I was wrong,” Ares said simply, freezing Alec in his pacing. When he turned to stare in shock at Ares, he continued. “I am so used to keeping Helios out of Family business as much as I can. I was trying to still do that even when they were the victims. I see now that I was wrong.”

Walking up to Alec, Ares cupped his cheeks. “ If I were to ask of you, to be my reminder, that everything does not need to be a secret. Would you be that for me?”

Alec looked into Ares’s eyes. Seeing what he needed to, he said, “Yes, Ares. I can be that for you. But would you be willing to listen?”

“To you? Yes, I will. I may hesitate as I adjust. But I will listen to you.” Ares replied, “Always.”

“Okay. I’ll do it.”

“Thank you,” Ares replied, pressing a kiss to Alec’s forehead. “Now let us go to sleep.
