After we finish piling the sandbags near the Magnolia, I rush to my house for physical therapy then to my room at the Magnolia to pop another pill and get cleaned up to meet Granger at Mike’s office since it’s neutral territory. They’re already waiting on me when I walk into the room. Granger is dressed in a casual pair of slacks and a button-down.

“Here is the contract my attorney drew up.” He hands me a folder.

I take my time reading every word, scratching out anything I don’t deem appropriate with a red pen. “Have your attorney address these issues, and I’ll cut you a check for the promised amount of the property.”

He glances over them. “Nothing major. I’ll have it printed and waiting for your signature by the end of the day.” He takes the folder and marches out.

“Your old man know about the deal?” Mike chuckles.

“I’m headed to his place next.”

“You sure you don’t want back up.” He snorts.

“I’m good.” I turn to face him before I leave. “On second thought, if you don’t hear from me in a couple of days, you might want a new search warrant to look for my body.” I’m only half kidding.

As I get in the truck, I call Margret. “You up for a date tonight?”

“Who are you?” She giggles.

“A man who was turned on by a sexy blonde wearing a pair of tight blue jeans.”

“If I knew that’s all it took, I’d of worn them a long time ago.”

“I’ll pick you up at seven.” I hang up.

Dad is on the phone in his office when I arrive. He hangs up when I walk in and sit in the chair across from him.

“I heard you’re our new ranch hand. Does that mean you’ll be moving back to your house?”

“No. I’ll clean the place up. You can give it to Noah or Jane to live in.”

“I want my firstborn living in it.”

“That’s not going to happen. You’ll never accept me as a ranch hand. You don’t see me as anything other than your whipping post. I’m tired of you pulling the strings in my life.”

“You’re seriously going to give up being an attorney?” He leans on his oak desk.

“I haven’t decided fully yet.”

“I know I can be a gruff asshole, but I need you working for me. Family business needs to stay in the family, Son. There is no one else I trust more.”

That’s the nicest thing he’s ever said to me. “After what I’m about to tell you, you may feel differently.” I square my shoulders, readying myself for the fallout.

Any kindness marring his face turns to sour. “What have you done?”

“I made a deal with Granger. The farmers will buy back their land. No casino and no other housing projects outside of what he’s already started. He’ll leave our land and family alone. In exchange, we’ll give him access to the river of which we will control.”

“What the fuck? This is my property. You can’t go making a deal without me!” He slams his fist on the desk.
