Hailey stood on the edge of Sunnydale Heights, waiting for Jake to show up so they could meet Frankie for another group patrol. He’d texted earlier to say he would meet her on that corner, by the development sign. But he was late. She was about to text him to stuff it when a car rounded the corner too fast and jerked to a stop right in front of her. Jake was in the passenger seat. Sam Han was behind the wheel. Three guys she sort of recognized from school were wedged into the backseat.

When Jake got out, one of the guys from the back moved up to sit shotgun.

“So you’re coming tomorrow?” he asked Jake as Jake hopped onto the sidewalk.

“I’ll totally try to make it.”

“Dude, you haven’t made it in like a month.”

“It has not been a month. And the last two parties you told us about got busted by the cops anyway. I said I’ll try.” He waved to them, and the kid in the front seat buckled his seat belt and gave Hailey a wink.

“Hi, Hailey!” called Sam Han, and she waved before they drove off.

“Sorry about that.” Jake started toward the playground where Frankie said to meet. He walked fast, and Hailey had to push to keep up. It had been about a week since she’d been energy-sucked by the Succoro demon’s demon app, but there was still a left-foot drag in her step, and even her vintage Muppets T-shirt felt heavy.

“What’s with those guys and the winking?” she asked.

“I sort of told them I was meeting you for a date. Type. Thing. I hope you don’t mind; I had to tell them something to get them to drop me off,” he said when she shoved him. “It was lucky I was meeting you and not Frankie. Or they’d never have believed me.”

“What’s so wrong with Frankie?”

“Nothing’s wrong with Frankie. It’s just that everyone knows we don’t hang out like that. It was easier to say that I was meeting you. Next time I see them I’ll tell them I was wrong about the date and we were just hanging out. So there’s no confusion, okay?” He shrugged. “It’s not always easy to get away for this slaying stuff, you know?”

“Yeah. I guess so.” She would have had a hard time, too, she supposed, if she’d had to do it back home and ditch Mols.

He noticed her foot. “You okay to do this? You didn’t seem exactly on point training with Spike this afternoon.”

Hailey picked up her pace.

“Compared to what? That guy has killed two slayers. I’d like to see you or Sigmund go a round with him. Maybe you’d understand how hard his pale fists really are.”

“I could do it,” said Jake. “I’ve been training my whole life. Werewolf packs love to scrap.”

“I don’t think weird family wrestling sessions count,” said Hailey, though she had to admit that from what she’d seen, Jake seemed kind of like a natural.

Jake frowned, and his usually open, friendly expression slammed shut.
