CHAPTER SIXTEEN
âCPS will be here around 10:00 a.m. to get Delia,â said Gray, standing with Ashley and Gabi. âShe was pretty frightened when she started to come around last night. Ashley sat with her for probably three hours just talking to her until she fell asleep.â
Nine frowned, nodding at his quickly chilling breakfast.
âCan you tell us what she said, Ashley?â
âNormally, I would say ânoâ but we operate a bit differently here,â she said with a half-smile. âItâs not going to be easy to hear.â
âWe know,â said Alec nodding at her.
âHer parents died about eighteen months ago. The uncle was the only relative she had and despite the fact that heâd been charged with having sex with a minor twice before, the Parish said they didnât have any better options for her.â
âAre you fucking kidding me? I know a hundred couples that would have been happy to take that little girl in.â
âI wish I were kidding, Keith,â she frowned. âShe said that at first, he said he wanted her to just smile pretty for the camera. He told her a magazine was taking pictures of her for modeling. She couldnât see the screens, of course, so she believed him. Then he started asking her to take off her clothes. She refused, obviously, but he would feed her the gummies. She doesnât remember a lot, which might be a blessing. Delia is having flashes of him touching her or spanking her, hitting her with something; but there is nothing with clarity.â
âShe had trouble sleeping last night,â said Gabi. âShe said she kept hearing heavy breathing.â
Everyone in the room looked at one another, letting that statement sink in. That poor child was hearing the heavy, disgusting breaths of people getting off on her abuse.
âHas she been raped?â
âYes,â said Gray. âVaginally and anally. We can bring charges against the uncle, obviously.â
âUh, that might be hard to do,â said Bryce looking at Keith. Keith said nothing, just staring at the room.
âI see,â said Gray nodding. âYou might not believe this, Keith, or any of you, but Iâm more than okay with that. You didnât see what I saw on that little girlâs body. Sheâs going to need years of therapy and even then, Iâm not sure sheâll ever be able to have a successful, healthy, adult relationship. So donât feel guilty on my account. Iâm glad men like you will do what I want to do.â
âThanks, Gray. Do we know who sheâll be living with?â
âShe doesnât have any other family,â said Ashley. âCPS has found a foster family thatâs dealt with children of abuse before. They currently donât have any children in their home, so the situation might be ideal. The couple are both sighted, but theyâve worked with blind children before as well.â
âI guess thatâs the best we can hope for.â Keith saw the flash of sun on the bumper of a vehicle and stood. Doug was getting out of one of the SUVs with a young couple. âThat must be Jeremy and Josiahâs parents.
