Chapter Eleven

Faith stared at her wrist computer. Maybe she’d overreacted, but she’d offered to be there. To help with whatever the emergency was. Instead of jumping on her suggestion, he’d been silent for far too long. Was it because of her lack of medical training? She could fix that in a heartbeat by downloading medical textbooks so she’d have them to refer to.

Maybe she wouldn’t be all that fast at first, but soon she’d develop a useful skillset. Besides, she already understood how to heal her own physiology. How much harder could it be to treat non-augmented humans?

Disappointment ran deep. She’d been looking forward to more conversation. And more kisses. Possibly more than kisses. She yearned for the feel of his body against hers. What would he look like naked? Taste like? Hunger to see all of him ran through her like quick fire, igniting her nerve endings.

Maybe I shouldn’t go there. I might have scared him off when I jumped on his folding down the backseat idea.

It made sense. That was when he’d launched into excuses about it being too soon.

She glanced down at herself. She was dressed for a run. Just because she was by herself wasn’t a reason not to go. Perhaps she’d drop by the infirmary on her way back from a transit of Langley’s perimeter. At least that way she’d lay her fears to rest. Or else solidify them so she could move on before she got in any deeper. A dull ache formed beneath her breastbone. She didn’t want to move on. She wanted Reg, but he had to want her back.

Faith trotted out of her apartment and down the stairs. Once she was outside, she broke into a lope, covering ground fast. It felt good to move. When she didn’t exercise, her body rebelled, growing sluggish and lax. She thought about Reg again, because she couldn’t keep her mind off him. Was he sorry he’d told her about himself? Since he’d kept his beginnings hidden, maybe he was having second thoughts about sharing so much with her.

After the intimate conversation and cozy breakfast—and kisses in the car—she’d assumed they were well on their way to becoming a couple. Just like Honor and Milton or Glory and Roy.

Maybe I assumed too much. He said something about collective wisdom and needing more shared activities.

Yeah, but then I suggested we make our own rules, and I thought he agreed.

Faith chewed on her lower lip, thinking. Maybe she should sneak inside his thoughts to reassure herself all was well. Even though they hadn’t spent much time together, she longed for him. Ached to feel his arms around her again and inhale his clean scent. Bayberry and forests and something unique to him. It soothed her soul and kindled a bone-deep desire for something she’d never had.

I didn’t ask why he’d never married.

Faith ran faster. That was quite an omission. He’d said she could ask anything, so maybe that would be her first question next time they were alone.
