Sasquatch squinted as Ramón’s shots went wide—too wide, by, like, three or four feet. Each bullet chipped at the bar's edge, far from the gringo’s head. That wasn’t like Ramón. Historically, Ramón was one of the best shots in his cell. Ramón could hit anything. A bullseye with a bow. A rat with a BB gun. The man didn’t miss. At least, not until now. Sasquatch raised a single caterpillar-shaped eyebrow. If it were true he was missing on purpose, it would be the most damning, dangerous, and disgraceful thing Sasquatch had ever seen.

Earlier he had noticed a rosary sticking out of Ramón’s pocket, the "motel's rosary". Ha. He didn’t say anything at the time. Eventually he would. Ramón knew better than anyone that there was no church in the wild, which could only mean one thing.

They had their backs against the metal table, quickly reloading, when Sasquatch side-eyed his partner and whispered, “Gringo is reloading. We bullrush his ass.”

But Ramón shook his head. “That’s crazy.”

“Crazy? Fuck you mean crazy?”

“Your cocaine brain is making you suicidal.” He paused. “Wait until he pops up again, then we fire.” Ramón raised his head over the table to see that the two whities were still hiding behind the bar. “Any second, he’ll show his head—”

The gringo named Buddy fired off five quick shots from his .22, each one ripping into the top of the metal table, inches from the sicarios’ heads. Neither were hit, but the man had fired blind and come close to hitting his targets.

“Te crees muy muy!” Sasquatch raised his chin, barking at Buddy. He turned and whispered urgently to Ramón. “If we knews they were strapped, we would have brought machine guns!” Sasquatch slammed his alligator loafers against the wood planks.

“Yeah…” Ramón nodded with distracted approval.

Sasquatch paused. He leaned in close to his partner and saw a look in his eyes that he had never seen before. It was something he had never seen in any sicario. He didn’t know what it was, but it turned Ramón unrecognizable. It was the tiger leaving the wilderness to join the circus. It was domestication. His gaze had changed—dull, steady, like some bored bank teller counting change. The killer in him had walked out and left the lights on.

Sasquatch's mind settled like the calm before a storm. First, the gringos. Then, Ramón

Buddy rose to fire the twelve gauge, the weight of the gun familiar in his hands. As he did, a flicker of movement caught his eye—two sicarios, already upright, their eyes locked on him like predators. His instincts yanked him down to the floor, heart pounding. The muzzle flashes were blinding, the air splintering with rapid-fire shots. Bullets tore through the space he had just occupied, whistling past his ear. More liquor bottles above their heads exploded into art deco.

As it was with the first round of bullets, one shooter was much closer with his aim than the other. Buddy was now certain one of them was deliberately missing. But why? He hadn’t a clue.
