Paddling around the south side of Goat Island brings you into the shallowest part of this route, though enough water can be found in the shifting channels of the Skagit River on all but the lowest tides. On ebb tides and the first portion of floods, downstream currents will make moving up into the delta hard and slow work, with few eddies to assist your progress.

At this point, you could take time to explore the many sloughs off the Skagit River’s channel and perhaps cut through the delta to Craft Island, about 2 miles to the east, if the tide is high enough.

The return to Swinomish Channel from the Skagit River is via the “fish hole” in the jetty, a small opening allowing migrating salmon that made a wrong turn into Swinomish Channel to get back to the river. Located about 200 yards from the eastern end of the jetty, this gap is not visible as you approach from upriver, but follow the jetty and you will find it. The hole is dry below midtide.
