Who is guilty of murdering Indra’s valiant if vainglorious son, and seeks to slay a daughter, both of whom are innocent of their father’s crimes. How then can I stand aside and allow an elephant in rut who is a danger not only to others, but to himself as well, to proceed as he pleases?’

‘But you did stand aside when Indra, the thrice-cursed mass murderer slew my sister, the blameless Ajamukhi!’ Taraka raged and the grief he was stricken with was a terrible thing to behold. ‘She too was innocent but you were not hot for her like you are for this one. Your seemingly altruistic attitude stems from your desire to wed and bed her. Shiva’s son indeed! I name you unworthy and if you insist on obstructing my path, I will smash your paltry forces and make you watch as I tear your prettyling from limb to limb with my bare hands! Responding to his command, his men took up the battle cry and launched a savage offensive. In the span of a heartbeat, the two massive armies locked horns together becoming a single, monstrous organism that writhed and heaved with the effort of killing. Arrows buzzed through the air, like angry bees striking their targets with a meaty thump. The volleys decimated thousands on both sides.

All around were the sounds of battle. There was the blaring of conches and horns, the pounding of war drums and the song of ringing metal as lances and javelins tore through the air and into their victims. Grunting with pain the feral dogs of war surged over each other. Their senses were on high alert, and they heard amplified the clangour of weapons, clamour of battle, gushing of
