Diagnosis and Clinical Features The diagnosis of obesity, if done in a sophisticated way, involves the assessment of body fat. Because this is rarely practical, the use of height and weight to calculate BMI is recommended.

In most cases of obesity, it is not possible to identify the precise etiology, given the multitude of possible causes and their interactions. Instances of secondary obesity (described in Table 20-3) are rare but should not be overlooked.
