Chapter Thirty-Four
Kane opened his eyes.
He awoke bleary and confused. For a moment, he was too drugged to know where he was. Then he remembered.
In the distance, naval ordnance dropped in thunderclaps along the coastal defenses. Anti-aircraft batteries answered back in a staccato cacophony. Through the thick safety glass of his cell, he saw green tracer fire light up the night. Even though they were miles from the battle, the building shook with the impact of the artillery.
It was time for his medicine.
He blinked, feeling slow and stupid like an exhausted swimmer breaking the surface. He flared his nostrils and sucked in oxygen, attempting to feed his brain like blowing on the faint embers of a dying campfire.
Get the fuck up, Reaper, General Thurstonâs voice said.
His body knew the schedule, and the forcibly induced dependence on the narcotic was already sending faint panic signals through his mind. He struggled to sit up. Head spinning, he grasped the sides of his cot with both hands until the nausea faded. Carefully, he swung his feet down and placed them on the filthy concrete floor.
He shivered in his loose thin gray coveralls.
Alertness increased by the moment, and his heart started beating faster. He was in his cell. There was a drain in the center of the ten-by-ten-foot closet of a room. Opposite the door was a bucket where they made him shit. He was in a prison; no, that wasnât right, a hospital. A sick joke of a torture-chamber hospital, but a hospital. He thought it was, anyway.
Outside in the night, a barrage of cannon fire erupted.
Sixteen-inch shells, high explosive, he thought.
The fact came to him automatically, unbidden. Then he connected the dots; Iâm a Marine. He thought about it, then amended it to former Marine. You were never an ex-Marine. Marines remained part of the Few and Proud for life, even after they left the service.
The building shook, and Kane fell against the wall. The overhead lights flickered briefly, then snapped off as the buildingâs power went out. The room plunged into darkness, and in the silence following the explosions, the greasy metal click of the electronic door lock was deafening.
Kane rose to his feet, trembling. Adrenaline flooded him in icy rushes that churned his stomach. He clenched his big hands into fists. Not daring to hope, he moved forward and tried the cell doorâwhich open.
They fucked up, he thought with savage glee. Theyâve done gone and fucked up.
He didnât hesitate. Pushing past the heavy metal door, he slipped into the hallway beyond. He had no memory of the place since heâd been drugged when the interrogators brought him in. His body ached from the beatings, and the inside of his shoulder throbbed where the nurse had been less than gentle in administering his shots.
He paused, trying to get his bearings. The hall was long, but in the gloom, he couldnât see either end. He turned slowly so that his cell door was on his left. There were more cells. To his right was a bare concrete wall.
