Chapter Seventeen

Alix

The crunch of tires on gravel had all three of us turning our heads. Sebastian had been gone for fifteen minutes or so, but now he was back. I spotted his truck barreling down the road, leaving behind a trail of dirt and dust in the air.

The truck was already pulling into the driveway when the yellow cloud gave way. Not far behind it, a black Suburban followed. I’d been laughing at something funny that Karma had said, but now the smile died on my lips.

Oh, shit.

Reality came crashing down on my head. I knew what this was about.

Mouth twisted in horror, I jumped up from my chair and, splashing in the surf, made it to the shore.

“Alix?” Gracie’s voice trailed behind me. “What’s wrong?”

My toes sank in deep layers of white sand. It clung to my feet and slowed down my desperate sprint. I didn’t have a long way to go and yet it felt as if the sand stretched for miles before me.

I trudged on, forcing my legs to work, feeling the burn in my thighs. My vision tunneled on Kane, standing on the stone patio beneath the palm trees with the others. All of the men had their backs to me, their attention focused on the arriving vehicles.

Oh, God. I whimpered in my head. I had to get to Kane before it was too late.

I tripped, fell, and landed hard on one knee. I must have cried out because all the guys turned around. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of Seb climbing down from his truck.

Faster. I need to get to Kane faster.

“Alix?” Kane reached out for me as I arrived at the flagstones.

“I’m sorry.” I fell into his arms, seeking his gaze. “I should’ve told you the truth. I should’ve come clean from the very beginning.”

Holding me upright, his forehead scrunched and his eyes darkened with worry. “What are you talking about?”

“Them.” I sobbed, flirting with hysteria, clinging to him with all I had. “They’re here. I’m sorry.”

“Alix, sweet, calm down—”

“Kane.” Sebastian’s voice echoed from behind us. “There’s someone here to see Alix.”

By now, Gracie and Karma had caught up with us. Gracie was buttoning up her cover-up and Karma had donned her T-shirt. They stood nearby, looking at me with concern. I sensed the others’ attention, too, bouncing from me to the newcomers, but I couldn’t get myself to look over Kane’s shoulder. Didn’t want to. Just…couldn’t.

“I was afraid,” I mumbled again against the crook of his neck. “I didn’t want to lose you.”

“Lose me?” His eyebrows rose, giving his face a speculative expression, but he planted a kiss on the top of my head. He kept his arm over my shoulder and pulled me close, steadying me against his side. Shoulders squared, jaw tight, eyes dimmed to the color of flint, he turned and faced the onslaught straight on, like the warrior he was.

He was a man of principle, of courage, of truth. I’d been a coward. I’d withheld the truth.
