USS OMMANEY BAY (CVE-79). At 1814 hours, Thursday, January 4, 1945, two explosions from torpedoes stored in hanger deck. Debris falls near the destroyers USS BELL (DD-587), on starboard quarter and USS BURNS (DD-588), on port bow. This explosion kills three men from the USS EICHENBERGER (DE-202) in whale boat near fantail. National Archives.
