“When we first met, we would go to the beach every chance we could. I got my mom’s old Airstream and we’d drive it up and down the coast, staying at different places,” Joe tells us. “When we realized we had a baby on the way, Ruby started looking into her adoption; she wanted to know more about her medical history so we would know for our child.

“After one of those trips, she stopped looking. Ruby wouldn’t talk about it anymore and said we’d have to take it on faith that our child would be healthy.”

“My middle name,” Melissa says smiling at him before looking at me. “Melissa Faith.”

“I don’t have one,” I tell her before turning back to Joe.

“She lost interest in the sea during her pregnancy. I never really thought about it, we had a lot on our plate between rushing to marry and find a place before Melissa came.”

“It was my birthday weekend and I begged to go to the shore,” Melissa continues for him when he seems to be choked up. “They had the kayaks sitting in the garage forever and I was determined.”

“And your mom?” I ask Joe, remembering what Esmeralda said.

“My mom? She was from Kansas originally. She won some contest that paid a nice chunk of money and flew to San Diego. The Airstream was her dream, a couple of her friends went with her and they spent the summer, slowly driving it up the coast,” he tells, shrugging his shoulders. “I was the result of a tryst she had along the way.”

“So, Melissa’s grandfather then,” I murmur to myself.

“What?” Melissa asks.

“The wi…person I spoke to earlier,” I say, catching myself before mentioning a witch in front of Joe. “It was suggested that you had a grandparent on either side who was a mer-person, whatever the fuck they’re called. And that was how you survived the fall and made it to shore.”

“The shipping lanes. Maybe that’s what happened,” Joe mumbles to himself and I tap the table in front of him when he stays quiet.

“Dad, what about the shipping lanes?” Melissa asks the question we’re both thinking.

“I was in logistics with Midnight Sea, and while I was there, the competition was pretty cutthroat. I mean there were accusations constantly flying between Midnight Sea and their competitors about sabotage and dirty practices.” Melissa and I exchange a look, not entirely sure what he means, rubbing his hand through his hair, he starts again. “Companies, ships, I mean, that can consistently beat out their competitors during ocean crossings are going to win all the major contracts.

“Over the years, Midnight Sea was able to win enough of the bigger contracts away from their competitors—they’d speed through storms that they were warned away from but for whatever reason, the ships and cargo made it through unscathed.”

“Okay, there’s a lot of information here that I need to look into…”

“You think my Ruby is a mermaid, or a sea-creature of some kind?” Joe asks, wiping a hand over his eyes.
