Wind Influences on the Track

To begin tracking exercises with a dog, most handlers start on calm days, if possible, especially when training first tracks and turns. Only later in training is it time to familiarize the dog with the treacherous wind and teach him to track taking the wind force and direction into consideration.

The wind can blow the odor of the track over large distances. Menzel and Menzel write that, on a 1.2 mile (2 km) U-track, an east wind with a force of 3.8 could blow the odor of the left track over 430 yards (400 m) onto the beginning of the right track.1

Wind-blown odors may cause a dog to overshoot turns in the track and miss articles. The dog has to learn not to be tempted by wind-blown odors; otherwise, he can easily be led astray by the deceptive and often changing wind.

Handlers must not imagine a wind-blown track as a straight line, as is often suggested in drawings. The changing wind and the lay of the land may cause the odor to be blown in a wavy pattern, creating an undulating edge to the wind-blown odor. Some dogs prefer to search at the edge of wind-blown tracks at the border between “track-odor” and “no-odor.”
