Chapter Ten
I didn't run into anyone on my way down from the loft. I went through the kitchen door and straight up to my
room where I repaired the damage to my makeup hair and changed my sopping wet underwear. I heard the whine of
Darren and Noah's bikes but I didn't bother to go to the window to watch them ride down the driveway.
Instead I sat on the edge of my bed and wondered how everything got so screwed up. If Leann hadn't come
snooping around and thrown me into a panic, how long would we have laid naked in the moonlight? What other
tender words might have been said?
" It seems like I've been waiting all my life for you." That would have been a nice thing to hear. " We'll see each
other as often as we can." Another sentiment I would have appreciated.
Instead I got a nice ration of humiliation and I had no one to blame for that but myself. What on God's
green earth possessed me to go all weird on him like that? I didn't want the whole world to know what we did in the
loft because, well, because it was mineâours. Instead of making him understand how precious and private it was for
me, I let him believe I was ashamed. Of him, of us.
And when he got all bent out of shape and started insinuating shit, he did his usual fine job tripping my
trigger.
I managed to put on a happy face and party down by the dock until everyone had either left or gone to bed
down in the barn. Complete exhaustion was the only thing that was going to put me to sleep anyway. Lonnie had
thankfully passed out hours before. So much for my theory of how everyone was going to behave themselves.
Once the parents were all gone the boys (and quite a few of the girls) made sure that none of the beer was
going to 'go to waste'. It didn't, but the keg left a few casualties behind. There was some puking and lots of sleeping
in uncomfortable positions. I took a last stroll around the war zone that the barn had become. It looked about like I
would have expected. Everyone looks innocent in their sleep.
I glanced up at the loft. The trapdoor was closed. I wondered if some other couple had found themselves in
the hay Darren and I warmed up. I wanted to be up there, with him, sleeping in the crook of his arm, with a
moonbeam shining across our naked bodies.
In the morning my mother was up early, whipping up biscuits and salty country ham that would force all my
hungover friends to drink plenty of the water they needed to recover. Plus, a ham biscuit is an easy 'toter' food.
Momma didn't want everyone hanging around all day. She wanted them to grab a biscuit and get lost.
We were just about 36 hours away from my parents leaving me on the steps of my new dorm home. I'm
pretty sure it was killing my mother and she was watching the clock like it was a doomsday ticker.
