Chapter Eight

Burke checked his watch and swore. He tapped on the accelerator, pushing his speed as much as he could without turning on his siren.

He was the only one with an emergency here. If he didn’t feel it like a fist to the gut every time Hazel’s eyes darkened with fear or uncertainty, he wouldn’t care so much about running late now that he and Gunny were off the clock. But it was nearly 5:30 p.m. And though he knew she would be the last one to leave her clinic after locking up, he’d gotten caught up in a search on the grounds at the KCI Airport that had required a team effort by KCPD and airport security to cover a large search grid after a multiple-bomb threat had been called in and a suspicious bag had been discovered in a culvert off one of the parking lots. Fortunately, the bag had ended up being an extreme case of lost luggage, and the depressed individual who’d called in the threat had been identified sitting in his car in another parking lot. He’d been apprehended and taken to a hospital. But now Burke’s clothes and skin were damp with the rain, his boots were muddy and he smelled like wet dog.

But he’d promised Hazel he’d be there to protect her and her family. Knowing her independent streak, she’d walk across the parking lot and drive home alone, just as she had all those years when there’d been no one in her life to look out for her. She was a smart woman, and strong. But a stalker who knew so much about her, and so much about explosives, created dangerous circumstances that required her to be extra careful regarding her security. Hell, had he reminded her of the basic safety precautions of checking under and around her truck before even approaching it? Did she understand situational awareness? Pinpointing the location of every person in her vicinity, taking note of her surroundings and anything that seemed out of place?

Would she call him if something did seem out of place?

He peered through the rhythmic sweep of the windshield wipers to race through a yellow light and cross into the industrial area north of downtown where her veterinary clinic and a neighboring dog park were located. Even though he and Gunny had put in a long day, he wanted to have his partner do a sweep of Hazel’s truck before she got in, just in case the perp who was terrorizing her made good on last night’s threat and had escalated from blowing up her daughter’s unoccupied car into a much more personal attack.

Burke eyed his cell phone in the console beside him, wondering if he should try calling her again. But since his first two messages about waiting for him had gone straight to voice mail, he focused on weaving through rush hour traffic and getting to the clinic as quickly as he could. Either she was busy, ignoring him or he was already way too late.
