Someone let the chaos outside happen for about fifteen minutes before there was an official announcement over the loudspeakers.
Max sat up in his seat and pushed his hair off to the side. There wasnât much to see from where he sat. He, along with some other students from the Hills all moved to the other side of the classroom. Not huddled but standing side-by-side. Max noticed that the gesture seemed to be mostly symbolic. He could notâand would notâsay if he would rise to anyoneâs defense if things got nasty.
Miss Covey sat on the edge of her desk, watching the student react to the goings on, but not really sure what to do herself. Max recognized the powerlessness in her eyes. She could go, she could stay. These were the thoughts she must have been measuring in her head. Her eyes darted from the door to the students in the back, where the Hills students sat gathered together.
But Miss Covey did nothing. She only sat, thinking, paralyzed by her own thoughts.
The chanting just outside of the room got louder, even turning into screeching until finally someone had stopped in front of hi Maxâs class.
The students who stood in the doorway were shoved to the side. Those who were smart enough to move did.
âWe will not be replaced,â the person said. She had short, dark hair that seemed to grow out like wild out of his head. She and Max locked eyes for a brief moment before Max turned to look away.
âYou,â the young woman said. She moved in closer. Miss Covey stood up from her desk and stepped in front of the student.
âThis is not your classroom. Please leave.â She said it with a sense of force that was almost believable.
But it didnât do anything to deter anyone. Not that Max believed it would anyhow.
The student gripped her pocket, pressing hard against the outside of it. Max could make out the outline of something, but he wasnât quite sure what it was. The girl wore baggy pants, no doubt planning for this whole thing.
âTina,â someone said from the classroom.
The girl responded, twisting her head quickly. Her hair bounced. âHey,â she said with a look of anger. She was here for business, not pleasure. The girl named Tina stood up onto one of the desks, pointed her finger at Max and the three others at the back of the room, and shouted, âYou.â
Max could feel his vision tunnel.
âGet out here. Now.â
Max threw his head from side to side, checking to see what the others were willing to do. The answer was nothing.
Until a Hills girl from the far left decided to back away from the wall. She inched forward, but kept her hands up, as if she were being held up at gunpoint. Her face went instantly red, a sharp contrast of the pale blond hair that hung in braids down the back of her head. âPlease,â she said, almost crying.
Tina pointed her finger at Max. âYou, too.â
Max shook his head, saying nothing.
