Chapter 13
The next morning KD was bright eyed earlier than usual and was insistent on getting out of her crib at 6:00am. Alex hadn’t slept much, mostly because Meg wouldn’t allow her back in bed; and the couch didn’t allow for much of a respite. But it didn’t matter, she hated sleeping next to Meg so uncomfortable or not, the couch was preferable at times. But Meg was going to DC in a few days for an entire week and inside Alex was jumping for joy.
Meg had gotten up grumpy as expected, but Alex had a diffuser waiting for her, coffee, waffles and sausage links; it was Meg’s favorite breakfast. She sat in silence and ate while reading the paper, even though Alex didn’t want to be berated or screamed at, Meg’s silence was frightening and it made Alex uneasy.
After Meg left for work, Alex got KD dressed to go visit the neighbor and bring them a party invitation. The party was going to be hosted at the Giorandano’s house since they had a pool. Kate had insisted that Alex allow her the liberty of throwing the party for her namesake. It would give the family and all the cousins a chance to see KD and for another reason that seemed to be the most prominent one, she hated Meg.
Alex left the house with baby and baby bag in hand, after the visit to Steph; they were on their way to Kate’s for an afternoon of swimming; although it was still early she knew that Kate wouldn’t mind. She had a little one herself that was always up at the crack of dawn and probably already in the pool. Alex stopped by the car and tossed the baby bag inside then proceeded across the street with her little one on her hip. “My goodness Sweet Pea, you are getting heavier every day.”
They walked up the steps to the door and rang the bell; Jen opened the door with an inquisitive expression on her face. Then she slowly smiled as she opened the door to allow her guests entry. “Good Morning, you’re out and about early this morning.” Jen said as she gestured towards the sofa. “Please have a seat; I’ll go get Steph…she’s a bit hung over. When we got home, she decided to continue drinking.”
“No…no, um…you don’t have to disturb her. We just came to drop this off.” Alex said as she handed Jen the invitation. “It is an invitation to this little one’s first birthday. I know how well Steph and KD get along, I just thought she…I mean both of you might want to come. I know KD would love to see her there.”
“Oh…okay. That’s sweet. I’m sure Steph would love to come. She certainly has taken to your little girl…” She said as she poked the baby in the belly.
Then Alex eyed a strange concoction sitting on the picture table, one that she had seen before causing her stomach to wrench up in knots and stealing her breath away.
