Chapter 11
Dawson Striker was a ghost. The people he worked for wouldn't recognize him if he walked up to them on the street. Once upon a time, he used to be Mason Hinds and he worked for the CIA. Then his cover was blown while he was on an undercover mission, forcing him to go underground. He was still establishing his new identity when he got a call from his former handler, asking him if he was interested in some freelance job. The target was a rebel leader in Iraq frustrating the CIAs attempt to control the region. Hinds agreed to do the job. It was simple enough. The only problem was getting into the compound of the rebel leader and leaving without getting spotted. Hinds found the rebel leader snoring in his bed, a naked woman not far away from his outstretched hands. The man was dead before he could make a sound and the woman beside him on the bed didnât even stir as Mason made sure his target was dead. He was on his way out of Iraq when the alarm was raised the next day. When he received his pay and realized he had just made what he would have earned in five years working with the CIA for just one mission, he knew he had found his calling. Mason Hinds disappeared and Dawson Striker was born in his place.
Those who had used him knew him by name and reputation only. Every new client he received wa by referral and carefully vetted before he accepted a job. He had escaped so many attempts to capture him and managed to survive for so long that some people believed he was nothing more than an urban legend. Sitting in the nondescript sedan he had rented for the mission, across from Amanda Bouts's house, Striker was starting to feel like a legend. And by that, he meant old and tired of his legacy. He had been thinking of retiring for a while now. He had more money than he could ever spend, and he no longer felt the thrill he used to feel on one of these missions. It was like he had used every method known to man to kill someone and even invented a few himself, and now he no longer loved his job.
The only reason why he had agreed to help Pallop on this mission was that they went a long way back, and the money was too good to pass up. Also, the task had been easy enough so far. First, he had snuck into Mastersâ house and found the older man sleeping on a recliner. The man seemed already out of it, and it was a simple matter of walking up to him and inserting the needle in his hand into the jugular vein of the older man, pushing down on the plunger before he woke up. Masters opened his eyes and swatted at his neck like he was trying to kill a fly. Then he saw Striker standing in front of him and understood what was happening.
