Chapter Ten
"I absolutely hate dayshift!" Reed threw his apron onto the couch and flopped down against the cushions.
"What happened?" His mother, who was reading a book, snapped it shut and placed it on the coffee table.
"People come in, with their sneers and comments. They all think Jeremy is guilty. And they think because I'm his brother I'm going to jump over the counter and stab them or something." Reed sighed, leaned forward and placed his head in his hands. He was on the brink of tears, just ready to give up, when his mother scooted closer and placed her arm around his back.
"It's okay," she said in that soothing voice, as her hand rubbed circles against his back like she was calming a baby.
"I know." He rose up and for the first time since he walked in, noticed her red puffy eyes. "Have you been crying?"
She moved away quickly and turned her head in a failed attempt to hide her face. "There's something I need to tell you."
Reed's heart immediately began to thump against his ribs. A knot formed in his stomach and he felt a little queasy. He knew this wasn't going to be good. "What?" he croaked, his voice rattled, exposing just how scared he was.
"I have been telling you I've been going to chemo for the last couple months." She turned to look at him. Her eyes filled with tears again and a couple rolled down her cheeks.
All Reed could do was nod.
"Well I haven't been." She closed her eyes and a sob burst from her lips. "I'm so sorry." She cried into her hands.
Reed felt his own chin being to shake as he watched the woman who had gave birth to him, who had loved him unconditionally, cry and shake.
"Why?" It took everything in him to get the word out.
"The treatment stopped working, Reed. The doctors tried everything they could, but the cancer just kept spreading."
"There has to be something they can do." He wasn't ready for this. He couldn't lose her and his brother at the same time.
"No, there's nothing. I'm dying, Reed."
He leaned back against the couch as tears poured down his face. This couldn't be happening. "How long?"
"A few months at best." She scooted closer again.
"How long have you been hiding this from me?" Anger mixed with his grief. How could she not tell her own son that she would soon be leaving the world?
"A couple months."
"So what? You planned on just dying without telling me? Letting me think that you would be okay?" Dammit, why had she done this? "Why are you telling me now?"
"Because Owen said that if I didn't tell you, he would."
Red flashed through Reed's mind. Owen knew? "So you told him and not me!" He stood, so angry he couldn't see straight. All he wanted to do was punch something and Owen was the first face that stood in line.
"Calm down."
"Don't tell me to calm down! Jesus! First you hide one of the most important details of your life from me then I find out Owen knew and I didn't.
